Could the ICC Be Assad’s Way Out?

Saif al-Islam, the son of former Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, is seeking surrender to the ICC. Despite being charged with crimes against humanity, he believes that handing himself over is the best option. Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad has faced increasing pressure to step down amidst the brutal crackdown undertaken by his regime. An indictment at the Hague could provide an attractive alternative to those who are likely to face death at home for their brutal crimes against their own people. As such, it could be in Assad’s best interests to also seek refuge in the Hague.
